Born into a musical family, Gregory Keith Ayers made his entrance on Thanksgiving Day in Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. His parents are Gloria and Frank Ayers. Frank Ayers was a member of the hit-singing group the “Dell Vikings”. Their most infamous song was “Come Go With Me.” Greg’s mother’s family was deeply rooted in Gospel. Charlie Moe sang with Ezell Brown and the Southern Sisters. They were most known for the songs, “You Got To Move” and “Do You Know The Man?” His Aunt Mattie sings with the Alive For Christ Singers best known for, “If You Got Jesus, What More Do You Need.” As a child on his visits to Charlotte, North Carolina, he was exposed to the music of The Mighty Clouds of Joy and the Five Blind Boys.
Greg’s own musical journey began at age four when his parents bought him a light blue acoustical guitar which at that time was taller than he was. From the very first time he pulled the string, his spirit was filled with the sound of music. It was the most beautiful sound he had ever heard.
A little while later he and his family moved from Brooklyn to New Jersey. They lived in Newark and eventually settled in East Orange where by then Greg’s interest in music bean to peak. He learned to play the drums and a toy organ. His cousins and their friends would always have him sing and dance for them for twenty-five cents. By the age of nine, he became a die-hard performer.
He got his first formal music training playing saxophone at East Orange High School. He was a fast learner and the music teacher offered him a spot in the High School Band at age fourteen, but by then he and his family were moving to Orange. At Orange High School he began receiving vocal training from the Choir Director, Ms. Jones and eventually received a partial scholarship for voice. It was at a Saturday music program where he began to study guitar. There he learned how to read and compose music. He also tried his hand at violin, but to no avail.
Greg’s first professional recording session was at age 16 with his friend Mike Muhammad and a band called Center Point. He soon started and played with a variety of bands; Symphonic Express, Magic Star and Private Party. He met Valerie Fullilove when he was with a band called Mercedes and Mink. Valerie was working at 4 Bits Recording Studio. They quickly became friends and started writing songs together. Known for his guitar expertise Greg played for a band called Exquisite Taste (formally Secret Weapon) whose hit song was “Must Be The Music.” At age 19, Greg played in Shag Rayfield’s Big Band.
Greg moved to California, where he now resides. He spent two years with the Modestro Townsend Opera Players performing, Faust and Porgey and Bess. He later returned to his musicianship and hooked up with Pfill Bryte, CEO of Pumper records and recorded with and played with him and many Bay Area artist, including Electric Chair, First Impression, Randy Carbone, Pamela Blueford and Lolita Moore.
